What to do after a car accident in Idaho

Nobody is thinking clearly right after a crash. Save this page, and if you're ever in a fender-bender around Boise, just work down the list. The goal is simple: make sure everyone's safe, protect yourself, and set up a smooth repair.

1. Make sure everyone is safe

Check yourself and your passengers first. If anyone is hurt, call 911. If the vehicles are drivable and it's safe, move them out of traffic and turn on your hazards. If not, leave them and get to a safe spot.

2. Call the police

In Idaho you're required to report an accident that causes injury, death, or property damage of $1,500 or more. Even for a minor one, an official report makes the insurance process far easier. Get the report number before the officer leaves.

3. Document everything

Stick to the facts when you talk to the other driver — you don't need to admit or assign fault at the scene.

4. Call your insurance company

Report the claim as soon as you can. They'll give you a claim number and walk you through next steps. Be honest and factual; you don't have to speculate about anything you're unsure of.

5. Know this: you choose the repair shop

Your insurance company can recommend a shop, but they cannot require you to use one. The choice of who repairs your vehicle is yours.

Insurers often steer you toward a "preferred" shop. That's allowed — but it's your car, and you have every right to take it to a shop you trust. Pick one that's certified, stands behind its work, and communicates with you. A good shop will also handle the back-and-forth with the insurer for you.

6. Get an estimate

You can get a repair estimate before or after the insurance adjuster looks at the vehicle. A reputable shop will document everything and work directly with your insurer, including any additional damage found once they start the repair (very common — initial estimates rarely catch everything).

A quick word on timing

The sooner the car is in front of a shop, the sooner hidden damage gets found and parts get ordered. If your car isn't safe to drive, ask about towing — many shops, including ours, can arrange it.
